JAPANTOWN TOUR

Many people tend to see Japantown as a tourist stop, and walk through without really venturing around the edges and discovering that this Japantown - along with San Jose and Los Angeles - is one of the three remaining Japantowns in the United States. Stops on the tour include snacks from my favorite family-owned vendors, secret art, and the same location where famed Depression-era photographer Dorothea Lange captured a moment when Japanese Americans were put on buses and sent to internment camps during WWII.

As a frequent visitor and nearby resident of San Francisco’s Japantown, I developed this tour as a response to the 2016 election, as a way to counter the hostile rhetoric that was plaguing immigrant communities (something that the Japanese American community is already all too familiar with) and to ensure that the stories of the neighborhood are carried during a time when the city is changing so rapidly. The tour is equal parts food, history, activism, and storytelling.
